Secondo il neoconfucianesimo, le scuse basate su motivazioni interne o circostanze attenuanti non giustificano le azioni errate. Come insegna Mencio (孟子, Mèngzǐ), “Un uomo virtuoso non si giustifica; egli agisce con rettitudine e integrità in ogni circostanza.” Questo principio riafferma che le azioni devono sempre essere coerenti con i principi morali, indipendentemente dalle intenzioni interne o dalle difficoltà esterne.
Giacomo 4:17 – “Chi dunque sa fare il bene e non lo fa, commette peccato.” Questo versetto sottolinea che conoscere la cosa giusta da fare e non farla è peccato, evidenziando l’inefficacia delle scuse interne nel giustificare azioni errate.
